With over 1,100 recognized celebrations in the United States every year, it is easy to overlook certain days of observation. [1] Some, like National Hug your Dog Day, National Answer the Telephone Like Buddy the Elf Day, and World Emoji Day, are frivolous and fun. While others, like International Day for the Abolition of Slavery or World AIDS Day, are meant to bring awareness to a cause. National CBD Day may appear to certain people to fall into the first category, but it actually belongs to the second.
History of National CBD Day
CBD, or cannabidiol, was first discovered in 1940, but didn’t merit a day of recognition until 2018. That was the same year the federal government passed the Farm Bill legalizing hemp and thus CBD products. [2] Since the approval of this law, the compound annual growth rate for CBD users has been 21.3%, with 4.9 billion users in 2021. [3] That number is estimated to rise as high as 47 billion by the year 2028.
Raising Awareness About CBD
CBD provides therapeutic benefits without an intoxicating effect. The FDA has approved a CBD based medication, Epidiolex, to treat seizures stemming from multiple medical conditions. [4] CBD can also be used to treat ailments like anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. [5] CBD was also proven to be beneficial for animals as dietary suppelemnt. [6] National CBD Day could help reducing any stigmas associated with its usage and may help more people discovering its medicinal uses and health benefits.
How to Celebrate National CBD Day
If you use CBD, share your stories. It may not be wise to discuss specific medical conditions, but helping others to understand will lead to increased empathy. If you don’t use CBD, use this day as an opportunity to start a conversation about it. That conversation could be with friends, relatives or even a health care provider.
