CBD has become a familiar part of sports-recovery marketing. In one survey of more than 500 male professional rugby players, around a quarter said they had used it — most commonly for pain, recovery or sleep.[1]
The evidence is still small, but it’s no longer entirely speculative. Several trials have produced encouraging signals for soreness and short-term function, while others have found little or nothing.
What happens when you’re sore
Hard or unfamiliar exercise — especially movements that load a muscle as it lengthens — can disrupt muscle fibres and connective tissue. The repair response that follows involves inflammation, temporary strength loss and soreness, which usually peaks a day or two later.
The reasoning behind CBD is straightforward from there: it has anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies, so it might reduce the soreness.
Worth pausing on that logic, though. Post-exercise inflammation isn’t purely a problem to be suppressed — it’s part of how muscle adapts and gets stronger, which is a live debate around anti-inflammatory use in sport generally.
That doesn’t make reducing soreness inherently counterproductive. The useful question is whether CBD can make recovery more comfortable without interfering with adaptation — and no human trial has shown that CBD blocks training gains — though none has properly examined long-term training adaptation either.
What the trials found
Some encouraging signals. A 29-person feasibility trial found less pain, less strength loss and less disability 48 hours after a muscle-damaging session in participants taking around 67 mg daily.[2] The product was a full-spectrum hemp tincture taken for ten days beforehand and five days after, so the result applies to that formulation rather than to isolated CBD.
A smaller study of 23 people using about 17 mg reported a faster return towards baseline soreness, though its statistical analysis makes that result less secure.[6] Another small trial found 60 mg was associated with lower creatine kinase and myoglobin, and better squat recovery at 72 hours.[8]
A multi-ingredient formula also produced encouraging results. A 2023 trial found a recovery drink reduced the extent to which soreness interfered with everyday activities.[4] The formula contained CBD, CBG, beta-caryophyllene, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and magnesium, though, so the contribution made by CBD can’t be separated from the rest.
Other studies found no clear benefit. Three small trials of topical CBD found no consistent effect on soreness, muscle function or measured muscle damage.[3] Oral results have been inconsistent too: 150 mg daily for three days did not improve soreness, swelling or strength in 13 untrained men,[5] and a controlled trial in 24 trained women found no reduction in inflammation, fatigue or performance loss.[9]
What that adds up to
The most encouraging finding is that CBD may reduce perceived soreness and preserve short-term function after hard exercise. That signal has appeared in more than one small study, though not consistently.
Evidence for the underlying repair process is less convincing. A few trials have reported less strength loss or favourable changes in muscle-damage markers at particular time points,[8] but none has established that CBD speeds muscle repair.
There’s also no established recovery dose. Positive studies have used roughly 17 to 67 mg, but null studies have used both comparable and higher amounts. Differences in formulation, timing and design make them genuinely hard to compare.
The sleep angle
CBD might also support recovery indirectly, through sleep. Better sleep would matter even if CBD had no direct effect on muscle tissue at all.

If you compete, read this bit
CBD was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list in 2018, and remains the only cannabinoid that isn’t prohibited. THC, CBG, CBN and every other cannabinoid remain prohibited in competition.[7]
That matters because retail CBD is inconsistently labelled, and products have repeatedly been found to contain cannabinoids that aren’t declared. A full-spectrum or broad-spectrum product is a particular risk, since minor cannabinoids are the point of it.
A batch-specific lab report reduces the uncertainty. It doesn’t eliminate it, and neither does third-party sport certification. If you’re subject to testing, that residual risk is yours to carry.
The honest summary
CBD isn’t a proven muscle-repair treatment. But the evidence offers a credible reason to think it may reduce soreness and preserve short-term function after hard exercise. The positive trials are small and the results inconsistent, so it’s better described as promising than established.
The doses producing those signals — roughly 17 to 67 mg — are within reach of ordinary consumer products, which isn’t true of most CBD research. Short trials have generally found these amounts well tolerated, though CBD can cause side effects and interact with medicines.
For someone not subject to drug testing, and not taking potentially interacting medicines, a batch-tested oral product is a reasonable experiment. Judge it by whether it meaningfully improves soreness or function — not by claims that it rebuilds muscle faster.
And it belongs alongside the fundamentals rather than in place of them: enough sleep, enough protein, sensible progression.
