Can CBD Oil Be Used During Pregnancy?

Written by Lisa Rennie

As with any type of supplement, it’s always important for expectant mothers to be cautious about what they consume, and even put on their skin.

There are plenty of things that pregnant women should steer clear of in order to protect their unborn children, but is CBD oil one of them? Or can CBD oil be safely used during pregnancy?

The thing is, there are plenty of symptoms that come with pregnancy that aren’t exactly pleasant or comfortable. Nausea, anxiety, and dry, tight skin are all common symptoms that pregnant women suffer from, and CBD oil is effective at treating all of these.

But can pregnant women use CBD oil to alleviate these and other pregnancy-related symptoms safely?

Obviously, no psychoactive substances like THC should be taken during pregnancy, but CBD doesn’t produce any mind-altering effects, so it would stand to reason that the latter would be a much safer alternative for pregnant women.

With that said, certain modes of consumption are safer than others. For instance, vaping CBD or consuming it through edibles may still be somewhat risky, as the science and research behind the use of CBD during pregnancy is still in its infancy.

CBD oil, on the other hand, appears to be the safest variation of CBD for pregnant women, which can be used and consumed in a number of ways. For starters, it may be taken orally by placing it under the tongue to be absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth.

Pregnant women who may be experiencing anxiety, nausea, or other unpleasant symptoms related to their pregnancy may find quick relief by taking CBD oil in this fashion.

CBD oil can also be used as a topical to be lathered on the skin, particularly in areas that are more prone to stretch marks. There are plenty of tinctures, creams, and lotions infused with CBD oil to be used specifically for this purpose. There are also CBD bath bombs that can be incorporated into bath time.

The key to using CBD oil during pregnancy is to use a product that uses organic ingredients, is third-party lab tested, and is fully transparent about what’s in the product. That includes not only the quality of the CBD, but how the cannabinoid was extracted and what its concentration level is.

Further, it’s important to ensure that the CBD is extracted from organic, high-quality hemp to ensure that the product does not contain any traces of THC.

So, is CBD oil safe for consumption and use during pregnancy? It’s tough to say right now, as there just isn’t enough science yet to confirm this. We don’t currently have any long-term studies regarding the effects of CBD over the long run road when used in utero. Any pregnant woman using CBD products should be aware of this.

That said, it could be a better alternative to many pharmaceutical medications that are often prescribed to expectant mothers to tackle various symptoms.
