Even though the Cannabis industry has historically been linked to the causes of environmental conservation, the lack of available green packaging has forced Cannabis packagers to opt for less environmentally friendly packaging solutions. It is a challenge for most cannabis businesses to be as environmentally conscious as they would like, in part due to the cheaper price tag of non-recyclable plastic goods, and in part due to the lack of available renewable solutions. Strict government regulations in states that have legalized the medical and adult-use markets have also contributed to the challenge of those working in the industry trying to implement ‘green’ packaging. Now, there is a movement towards using cannabis’s own waste to form the core of its packaging. This panel will discuss the current issues in green cannabis legislation, as well as the direction the industry would like to take in the future.
