A cannabis manufacturer in Portland is being required to recall some of its products over potentially elevated levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
A cannabidiol (CBD) product labeled as “Broad Spectrum” was ordered to be recalled by the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC).The product, which is unflavored CBD Drops from Curaleaf’s Select brand, was found to contain too much THC.
Considering the psychoactive properties of THC, the OLCC was concerned over possible risks for consumers who may not be aware of the true THC content of the drops and their potential mind-altering effects. CBD does not have any psychoactive effects, but does share other similar medical benefits as THC.
In response to the recall, Curaleaf is taking steps to determine how to rectify the situation. Approximately 500 products are affected, which were available to the public in Oregon as of June 19. The product was not sold in any other state.
Currently, the recalled products are being removed from stores, and about 200 bottles are still in the manufacturer’s inventory in quarantine.
This isn’t the first time that the Select brand has been required to recall one of its products. The cannabis retailer found itself in violation of the OLCC back in October 2020 for falsely attesting that one of its vaping products was made entirely of cannabis.
As a result of this contravention, a $110,000 penalty was issued to Cura Cannabis, the company that originally created the Select product line. The lawsuit was later settled by Cura’s former owners agreeing to pay $500,000.
Cura’s troubles didn’t start there. The company started on shaky grounds after its initial funds came from a real estate scam that involved the federal imprisonment of a Lake Oswego investment manager.
Further, former Cura CEO Nitin Khanna stepped down in 2018 after some women within the cannabis community brought up a previous allegation of rape. Although Khanna denied the allegations, he still chose to remove himself from the company.
Curaleaf inevitably purchased Cura last year in an all-stock deal valued at an estimated $400 million.
Anyone who purchased a bottle of unflavored Select CBD Drops can return or discard it. Curaleaf is asking anyone who purchased the product to contact the company at info.or@curaleaf.com.
